Build Powerful Heatmaps To Understand How People Use Your Site

Are you struggling to understand what kind of content you should produce to attract your target audience, engage with them, and convert them?

Most small businesses, that are just starting out, do.

Budding businesses want to know the answers to three questions related to their content –

  1. Which content gets attention?
  2. Which content gets ignored?
  3. Which content produces the desired action?

The answers to these questions can be found easily by behavioral analysis of visitors through graphical visualization.

Heatmap is a graphical visualization of on-site behavioral data that helps site owners answer the three above questions. These questions help businesses create and deliver great web experiences to their visitors that get them their target audience and increase their conversion rates.

You can use a website heatmap software like Webmaxy to create heatmaps for free.

In this post, we have explained how you can build powerful heatmaps to understand how visitors use your site for free.

1. Sign-up for Webmaxy

Go to the sign-up page and create a free trial account on Webmaxy. Webmaxy is a free heatmap tool built for small businesses to help them understand their audience in depth.

2. Connect your Webmaxy account with your website

After you sign up, you will have to complete four steps so that Webmaxy can start getting behavioral data of your visitors from your website and generate heatmaps for you. Below are the descriptions of the steps –

  1. Account setup: You will have to enter your website’s URL, the average volume of monthly visitors, and the industry you are in. Webmaxy uses this data to deliver a more personalized experience to you.
  2. Setup goal: Here you can choose what is the gain you are looking for via using Webmaxy. Whether it is gaining more visitors, earning more leads, or improving conversions.
  3. Install code: This is where you copy and paste the JavaScript (JS) code to your website’s backend. Doing this will start fetching data.
  4. Verify integration: Sit back and relax if you have properly completed the above steps. This is where Webmaxy will ensure the connection is correctly set.

If you get any kind of error message on your screen in the verification step, give it a few seconds and retry. If the issue still persists, retrace your steps and try again.

3. Create a Heatmap

Now, the fun begins. Webmaxy lets you create heatmaps for multiple pages so that you can independently analyze the behavior of your audience and take the necessary steps.

Creating a heatmap is pretty straightforward, just go to Analyze>Heatmap in the left-hand side menu bar and click on the “Create new heatmap” button on the top right corner.

Now follow the on-screen prompts and fill in the required details.

Keep in mind that the heatmaps will take some time to generate as the website heatmap software needs enough data to present them to you. That depends on the volume of traffic your website receives. This is the reason Webmaxy’s heatmaps can also be used to test marketing campaigns.

4. Navigate through the Heatmap

After you create your heatmap for a page and give it some time to fetch your data, you can access it from Analyze>Heatmap. After you click on any of the red play buttons, the corresponding heatmap will open up in a new tab.

You will see something like this.

Here are the important areas of the heatmap –

  • On the top-left corner, you will see a summary of the total number of clicks and sessions that are visualized on the heatmap.
  • At the top center, you can find a dropdown by using which you can generate a heatmap for users from a particular device.
  • At the top-right, you can set the date range to see time-specific heatmaps.
  • At the bottom left, you can find the “share” button that enables you to share the report with your team members.

5. Navigating through the scroll map

You can toggle to the scroll map through the click of a button at the bottom-center of the page. You will be redirected to a new page on the same tab, which will appear similar to the image below.

Scroll maps are a great tool for you to understand the depth of the scroll and the level to which your audience is interested in your content.

Different areas are colored differently to represent the depth of the scroll. For instance, the area highlighted in red gets more attention than the area highlighted in green and so on. By relying on the scroll map, you can create better content that keeps your readers engaged more.

Here are some key elements –

  • By using the “Date Range” preference on the top-right, you can get a time-specific scroll map.
  • At the bottom-left, you can see two different icons that will help you get scroll maps for visitors from different devices.

6. Get quick insights from the dashboard

Teams of small businesses usually have their hands full. It is not uncommon for them to lack time to always go in-depth while analyzing their target audience. Webmaxy solves that challenge with an innovative dashboard that will help you gain quick insights.

Through the dashboard, you can learn about the number of sessions, the nature of devices, the most visited pages, etc., within a few seconds.
